LIFE MUSIC: THE SONIFICATION OF PROTEINS

A few years ago, artist John Dunn and biologist Mary Anne Clark collaborated on the sonification of protein data to produce the audio CD "Life Music." “When we began the protein music project, we wanted to convey both something about primary aminoacid sequence and something about the folding patterns of proteins. Our goal was to create an audio CD album that would stand on its own as art music, and at the same time offer empirical proof of the esthetic patterning of nature’s deep structure”.

In the following article, authors describe the process by which this collaboration merges scientific knowledge and artistic expression to produce soundscapes from these basic building blocks of life, that may be encountered as esthetic experiences, as scientific inquiry, or both. The rationale for both artistic use of the science and scientific use of the art is described from the separate viewpoints of artist and scientist.

Dr. Philip Schofield is a Conjoint Professor in the School of Fine Art at the University of Newcastle. Prior to that he was an Associate Professor in Biochemistry at the University of N.S.W.

Since he is both an artist and a scientist he is in an unique position to facilitate the interfacing of art and science. He is committed to bridging the perceived gap between art and science. He is also currently a member of the ArtsHealth Research and Practice Centre at the University of Newcastle.

The principal theme of his art practice is the fusing of art and science, and the bridging of the "two cultures". By virtue of his experience in science and in medical research, he is uniquely placed to initiate and consolidate such syncretism.

In practice, he uses the printouts from a variety of imaging devices used in biology and medicine, such as DNA scans, and combines these with personal fragments such as photographs and documents.These juxtapositions produce new forms of biography and autobiography, and allow new expressions of singularity and selfhood. They also provide new forms by which to visualise and decode contemporary biology and medicine.

In his recent works he fuses fragments of photographs of personal lives with various imaging systems of contemporary biology and medicine. This fusion produces new perspectives of persona and self, and generates new forms of expression of biography and autobiography. It also provides new perspectives by which to visualise and interpret aspects of modern biology and medical science.

ART + SCIENCE bridges the perceived gap between art and science/medicine by interfacing elements of the visual arts with elements of current biological research methods in molecular biology and medicine.The works incorporate strands of contemporary genetic research with fragments related to individuals or to historical figures in the fields of biology and medicine.

The fusion of fragments of personal photographs or documentation or constructs of historical items with the output of imaging systems of modern biology and medicine generates new perspectives of biography and of contemporary biological and medical science.

La Voce di IBIOCAT- Alberto Olivero recita “Solstizio d’inverno” di Guido Ceronetti

Ho recentemente appreso che il Consiglio dei Ministri, nella seduta del 18 dicembre 2008, ha deliberato di concedere l'assegno straordinario vitalizio previsto dalla legge n. 440 del 1985 (Legge "Bacchelli") in favore del poeta, saggista, romanziere, giornalista, traduttore, drammaturgo, teatrante e marionettista Guido Ceronetti. La Legge Bacchelli (così denominata perché l'autore del romanzo Il mulino del Po fu il primo a fruirne) aiuta personalità di chiara fama che si trovino in precarie condizioni economiche. La decisione è stata assunta dal Consiglio dei Ministri su richiesta del diretto interessato, che ottiene così un vitalizio di circa 18 mila euro annui. Nato a Torino il 24 agosto 1927, Guido Ceronetti è una figura poliedrica di sconfinata erudizione, oltre che una voce originale e anticonformista nel dibattito pubblico. Autore di diversi libri, scrive sul quotidiano La Stampa (v. due post precedenti).

Durante le vacanze di Natale, mia mamma mi ha fatto conoscere questa bellissima poesia di Guido Ceronetti, chiedendomi contestualmente di trasmettere ad Alberto Olivero - la "Voce di IBIOCAT", di cui aveva apprezzato altre performance recitative sul nostro sito – la preghiera di prendere in considerazione questi versi per un'eventuale lettura.

Con la sua consueta generosità e disponibilità, Alberto ha esaudito in breve tempo la richiesta, regalando un'interpretazione intensa, ma al tempo stesso misurata e sobria, come è nel suo stile.

Mi sembra doveroso condividere con tutti i visitatori del Blog di IBIOCAT un omaggio così perfettamente riuscito.

Poeta, saggista, scrittore, giornalista, artista di strada, marionettista, traduttore di classici latini, testi biblici e poeti moderni, critico del costume e autore per il teatro.
Guido Ceronetti, con la sua vastissima e raffinata cultura, riesce a cogliere "l'emanazioni segrete dell'anima collettiva" del suo pubblico attraverso numerosi generi artistici.

Nasce a Torino nel 1927 sotto il segno della poesia e della filosofia, nello stesso anno in cui Heidegger pubblica Essere e tempo.
Fin dalle sue prime pubblicazioni, indaga il sentire umano e affronta grandi temi dell'uomo: il silenzio, il corpo, l'essere, il tempo e il viaggio. Dietro l'aspetto dimesso, un po' trasandato, si nasconde uno dei personaggi più importanti nel panorama letterario italiano, con una capacità di analisi e critica della società contemporanea eccezionali e uno spirito curioso e provocatorio.
Tra il 1943 e il 1945, Ceronetti partecipa alla Resistenza con stampati clandestini a Torino. Nel 1945 inizia l'attività giornalistica su diversi quotidiani e periodici; dal 1972 è collaboratore de La Stampa e diviene cronista di fatti culturali e sociali di ogni tipo.
Nel 1970 fonda ad Albano, vicino Roma, insieme alla moglie Erica Tedeschi, il Teatro dei Sensibili, in una sala dove allestisce spettacoli di marionette pubblici che viaggiano in Italia e all'estero. Le marionette, definite "ideofore", riescono, secondo Ceronetti, a cogliere il tragico, poiché sono "emblema della libertà negata all'uomo da chi ne tiene i fili".
Il primo spettacolo allestito è la Iena di San Giorgio.
Nel 1976 scrive Diaboliche imprese, trionfi e cadute dell'ultimo Faust, che viene portato in scena a Spoleto, nel 1979.
Del 1978 è I misteri di Londra. Segue Furori e poesia della rivoluzione francese, rappresentato a Roma nel 1983 con la collaborazione di Adriano Dallea.
Del 1988 è invece Mystic Luna Park e del 1991 Viaggia, viaggia Rimbaud. Nell'estate 1996, il Festival di Asti porta in scena lo spettacolo Per un pugno di yogurt. Nel corso dello stesso anno viene proposta, sempre ad Asti, la messinscena di Deliri disarmati, con la regia di Lorenzo Salveti. Nel 2001, porta a Milano Ceronetti Circus, un'antologia delle sue più note pantomime, mentre nel 2002 M'illumino di tragico, una ricerca teatrale del senso del tragico.
Dal 1991, diventa suonatore ambulante di organo di Barberia e porta nelle strade e nei festival letture di poesie e numeri circensi, come Casalinghitudine, Gloria di manichini, La donna segata, L'uscita del cobra, le Canzoni per le vie.
Tra le sue opere più significative Un viaggio in Italia, Il silenzio del corpo e Tutte le poesie; le traduzioni "storiche" delle Poesie di Catullo, degli Epigrammi di Marziale, delle Satire di Giovenale; i volumi della "Filologia biblica", come lui stesso ama definirli, Il libro di Giobbe (1972), Il Cantico dei Cantici (1975), Il libro del profeta Isaia (1981), Il libro dei Salmi (1985) e Qohélet(2001).
Con quel suo corpo esile e quegli occhi azzurri laconici, Ceronetti ama nascondersi dietro una delle sue tante marionette ma, nonostante la timidezza gli consenta solo raramente di apparire in pubblico, il suo impegno civile è molto forte.
In un'intervista del Café Letterario, nel 1999, quando gli viene chiesto quale sia il suo "compito", l'intellettuale torinese risponde: "Di avvertire la gente di certi pericoli. Vedi uno che cammina sull'orlo di un precipizio e, ovviamente, gli dici che può cadere. Sì, forse è questo il mio compito".

"… Guàrdale, le tue mani: ti sembra possa starci il destino della Terra, il presente, il futuro, l'umanità, tutto? La smisurata realtà dell'inquinamento ormai planetario è un'ustione che non rimediano pomate, e non viene da fuori-uomo, ma da dentro, dalla sua mostruosa incomprensibilità. E l'ustione, nuda anche se mummificata di garze, implora questo, di essere capita. È l'analgesico degli analgesici, che qualcuno ci capisca, lì è la felicità di chi soffre. (…)

Gli appelli a salvare la stessa specie-uomo trovano una sordità perfetta e motivata. All'epoca delle paure dell'Anno Mille, il panico non riguardava per nulla la sopravvivenza della specie, investiva l'homo religiosus che sentiva pesare su di sé, come peccatore, il giudizio divino. La folla erano terrori d'individui, ciascuno per sé soltanto. Bergman, nel Settimo sigillo, ha fotografato questo... Il domani-che-fa-paura, anche in questi Duemila, nel comune sentimento del tempo, è bloccato sul presente stretto: se gli dici che scarseggerà l'acqua tra o tra... e che le coste potrebbero essere sommerse e non più edificabili in un imprecisato ma prossimo anno tutti seguiteranno a sprecare l'acqua, a contaminare le falde e a bramare, a costo di ladrocinio, di farsi casa sul mare. La desertificazione può pur essere in atto: non arrivano a immaginarsela. Le memorie sembrano essersi assoggettate a indicibili meccanismi di rimozione... L'espressione «il futuro dei nostri figli» è il tonfo di una pera marcia, i cerebri dei padri hanno per loro una stella fissa su laurea-guadagno-casa, figùrati se arrivano a temere i Re della Peste incombenti, le guerre per l'acqua o le religiose-nucleari, non aprono gli occhi se l'evento non è là e già li abbia travolti. Ai nostri compagni terrigeni come ai miei illuminati concittadini, il futuro della specie importa quanto, della strage epidemica, importava a Samuel Pepys, illustre festaiolo londinese, quando la peste infuriava, nel 1665, in tutte le parrocchie di Londra e la sua carrozza inciampava nei cadaveri, mentre lo portava alle cene. Del resto, festa e pestilenza sono congiunzioni classiche: vedi il sublime apologo di Poe, La maschera della Morte Rossa. La FAO è un grande moderno edificio, labirintico di spazi, molti vuoti, e a Roma il clima da effetto serra era, settembrino, privo di torridità - tuttavia gli oratori lanciavano colombe di Risparmio Energetico, castigando gli eccessi di consumi per condizionatori d'aria - tuffati, come ciascuno dei presenti, tutti ormai avvezzi (qualcuno no) a vivere da maggio in poi dentro spaziosi frigoriferi, in una generale refrigerazione del tutto superflua. Per forza, se volete (ma davvero volete?) che l'energia sia risparmiata, dovete strangolare i consumi, impopolarmente: le partite in ore notturne, gli stadi illuminati come sale operatorie, sono uno spreco bestiale! I pubblici uffici, dove per l'intera giornata le luci sono accese dovunque ininterrottamente, nessuno che le spenga, perché non impartirgli dei limiti? E, lungo vie di notte deserte, che cosa vogliono quelle vetrine petulanti di fari, faretti, luci di ribalta, attrarre qualche gatto, qualche vecchio frac alla Modugno? E i monumenti? Ogni misera torricella che si affacci su un'autostrada vuole essere vista dalle auto, investita da lampadamenti da esterni televisivi! E i milioni di insegne da Las Vegas? Perché tutto deve abbagliare, accecare, impedire che atomi di buio s'intrufolino clandestini tra le palpebre maltrattate? In fondo a tutto questo sprecare c'è più superstizione che necessità, ed è in crescendo, impianti impianti impianti... Le luci di Natale, vere nefandezze, perché non le fate sparire, con tutte le loro idiozie di comete? (…)

Allora: alleggerendo, per via evidentemente sciamanica, il carico atmosferico e biosferico di CO2, si immetterebbero con giubilo ancor più motori in circolazione per produrne? Un'economia che non sa e non può far altro - senza mai contrarsi - che distruggere vita, se si accorda con quanto la limiterebbe necessariamente, correrebbe meglio al suo scopo finale, che si nasconde?

"Oggi ogni ramo della scienza sembra ci voglia dimostrare che il mondo si regge su entità sottilissime: come i messaggi del DNA, gli impulsi dei neuroni, i quarks, i neutrini vaganti nello spazio dall'inizio dei tempi...

Poi, l'informatica. E' vero che il software non potrebbe esercitare i poteri della sua leggerezza se non mediante la pesantezza del hardware; ma è il software che comanda, che agisce sul mondo esterno e sulle macchine, le quali esistono solo in funzione del software, si evolvono in modo d'elaborare programmi sempre più complessi. La seconda rivoluzione industriale non si presenta come la prima con immagini schiaccianti quali presse di laminatoi o colate d'acciaio, ma come i bits d'un flusso d'informazione che corre sui circuiti sotto forma d'impulsi elettronici. Le macchine di ferro ci sono sempre, ma obbediscono ai bits senza peso.

E' legittimo estrapolare dal discorso delle scienze un'immagine del mondo che corrisponda ai miei desideri? Se l'operazione che sto tentando mi attrae, è perché sento che essa potrebbe riannodarsi a un filo molto antico nella storia della poesia.

Il De rerum natura di Lucrezio è la prima grande opera di poesia in cui la conoscenza del mondo diventa dissoluzione della compattezza del mondo, percezione di ciò che è infinitamente minuto e mobile e leggero. Lucrezio vuole scrivere il poema della materia ma ci avverte subito che la vera realtà di questa materia è fatta di corpuscoli invisibili. E' il poeta della concretezza fisica, vista nella sua sostanza permanente e immutabile, ma per prima cosa ci dice che il vuoto è altrettanto concreto che i corpi solidi. La più grande preoccupazione di Lucrezio sembra quella di evitare che il peso della materia ci schiacci. Al momento di stabilire le rigorose leggi meccaniche che determinano ogni evento, egli sente il bisogno di permettere agli atomi delle deviazioni imprevedibili dalla linea retta, tali da garantire la libertà tanto alla materia quanto agli esseri umani. La poesia dell'invisibile, la poesia delle infinite potenzialità imprevedibili, cosi come la poesia del nulla nascono da un poeta che non ha dubbi sulla fisicità del mondo.

Questa polverizzazione della realtà s'estende anche agli aspetti visibili, ed è là che eccelle la qualità poetica di Lucrezio: i granelli di polvere che turbinano in un raggio di sole in una stanza buia (II, 114-124); le minute conchiglie tutte simili e tutte diverse che l'onda mollemente spinge sulla bibula barena, sulla sabbia che s'imbeve (II, 374-376); le ragnatele che ci avvolgono senza che noi ce ne accorgiamo mentre camminiamo (III, 381-390)".

Biocatalysis in the News - South Africa's Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has developed a low-cost biocatalytic method of manufacturing antiretrovirals used to treat HIV/Aids

South Africa's Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has developed a low-cost method of manufacturing the antiretrovirals used to treat HIV/Aids, paving the way for more extensive HIV treatment across Africa.

The CSIR's new technique will reduce the production costs of thymidine, a valuable ingredient in the antiretroviral (ARV) drugs AZT and stavudine. The two generic drugs are used in combination therapy treatment of HIV/Aids.

By using two drugs of different classes, combination therapy minimises both HIV virus resistance to ARVs and the development of serious side-effects. Because of this, it is the preferred method of ARV administration.

A fraction of the cost!

Until now, Indian drug manufacturers supported by state subsidies have offered the most competitively priced active pharmaceutical ingredients, and so dominated the global market. The CSIR's breakthrough will now allow for the production of thymidine at a fraction lower than the Indian market.

According to Dr Moira Bode, who led the CSIR project probing the low-cost production of ARVs, this research could stimulate establishment of an industry for local production of active pharmaceutical ingredients.

"This will empower African governments to supply more people with the life-saving drugs," Bode said.

The CSIR-developed technology relies on a biocatalytic step to produce thymidine.

The research included total development of the biocatalysis reaction to produce 5-methyluridine as well as the chemistry to convert 5-methyluridine to thymidine.

"This involved, among other things, initial screening work to identify useful enzymes, the fermentations to produce enzymes and the process development for scale-up of the biocatalytic reaction, as well as the chemistry," said Bode.

"The entire process was scaled at the CSIR to produce thymidine at kilogram scale."

The CSIR has filed a patent application on the technology and a new market player in antiretroviral manufacturing, Arvir Technologies, has been granted the commercial rights.

The company will explore various options, including granting licences to existing ARV active pharmaceutical ingredient producers, and establishing a new ARV pharmaceutical ingredients facility for South Africa.

South Africa needs ARVs

"We need to ensure that South Africa has an economically sustainable and well-secured supply of high quality ARVs," ," said Dr David Walwyn, CEO of Arvir.

"Negotiations are presently underway with government."

Dr Gatsha Mazithulela, executive director of the CSIR Biosciences research unit, said South Africa's high HIV prevalence rate made low-cost ARVs essential.

"In South Africa, with the number of people requiring ARV drugs estimated at approaching one million (where the CD4 count of the individual is less than 200), the local manufacturing of these drugs is an imperative," he said.

"Ironically, now that the science has been done, the challenge is to find commercial partners willing to invest in manufacturing. We look forward to interesting conversations with our government and other stakeholders in making local production of ARVs a reality."

Il 20 febbraio 2009, ricorre il centenario della nascita del Futurismo. Il Movimento Futurista ebbe infatti il suo esordio programmatico il 20 febbraio 1909, con la pubblicazione - sulle pagine del quotidiano parigino Le Figaro - del Manifesto del Futurismo, a firma del poeta Filippo Tommaso Marinetti che, in pochi punti salienti, incitava ad accogliere un mondo veloce e meccanizzato, tessendo al tempo stesso le lodi del progresso e della civilizzazione urbana, del dinamismo e dell'innovazione, in tutti i campi dell'arte e della vita (Carmelo Bene legge il Manifesto del Futurismo di Filippo Tommaso Marinetti: http://it.youtube.com/watch?v=F_9PxfqLxWc ).

Con il Manifesto del Futurismo, Marinetti celebrò la rivoluzione tecnologica dei primi anni del Novecento, esaltando la fiducia illimitata nel progresso, e decretando con impeto la fine delle vecchie ideologie.

Il movimento futurista fu una corrente rivoluzionaria, che esplorò e pervase ogni forma artistica, dalla pittura alla scultura, dalla poesia al teatro, senza trascurare la musica, l'architettura, la danza, la fotografia e la nascente cinematografia.

In sintesi, il Futurismo, primo movimento artistico legato a un'ideologia globale, coinvolse tutti i settori dell'esistenza: arte, politica, costume, morale, progresso scientifico, divenendo in breve tempo uno dei più importanti fenomeni artistico-letterari sviluppatisi in età moderna, sia in Italia, sia in Europa.

I Futuristi ebbero il merito di percepire per primi l'esigenza di un rinnovamento culturale profondo e radicale, in sintonia con i nuovi tempi.

All'inizio del secolo scorso, i Futuristi raffiguravano nelle loro opere la velocità e l'accelerazione, celebrandole con aerei, automobili e navi, rappresentati in prospettive tortuose e vorticose; il movimento, il volo, l'accelerazione, lo spostamento nello spazio erano suggestivi di un'intuizione che sarebbe rimasta riconoscibile per tutto il '900: la velocità nel cambiamento del mondo.

A quasi cent'anni dalla pubblicazione del Manifesto del Futurismo, l'Italia si appresta a celebrare la sua unica avanguardia storica.

Nello spirito del suo motto "Working together to accelerate a better life", IBIOCAT (Italian Biocatalysis Center), Consorzio pubblico/privato nato con l'obiettivo di diffondere in modo trasversale e pervasivo la cultura della Biocatalisi in Italia e nel mondo, nell'ottica di imprimere una spinta propulsiva alla qualità della vita in senso lato, uscendo dai termini prettamente scientifici della questione, per privilegiare la dimensione sociale, nonché l'applicazione "umanistica" del concetto di Biocatalisi, non poteva ignorare il centenario di un movimento, che ha fatto dell'accelerazione, del dinamismo, dell'innovazione e del cambiamento i suoi valori fondanti.

Biomimicry - E' la disciplina che cerca risposte a una domanda cruciale per qualsiasi approccio voglia definirsi "sostenibile": "Cosa farebbe la Natura in questo caso?". Si chiama biomimetica e invita a cercare soluzione ai problemi produttivi e tecnologici attraverso quello che Janine Benyus, biologa e autrice del libro Biomimicry (tradotto anche in cinese), definisce "uno straordinario laboratorio di ricerca e sviluppo funzionante da 3,8 miliardi di anni: la Natura". Basterebbe infatti che imparassimo a immagazzinare energia come fanno le foglie, tessere fibre nel modo in cui sanno i ragni, produrre ceramiche alla maniera

delle ostriche, filtrare l'acqua come accade nelle paludi (e l'elenco potrebbe continuare a lungo) per far sì che la nostra "impronta ecologica" – ormai chiaramente insostenibile per il pianeta – si alleggerisca di molto.

A dire il vero copiare dalla Natura non è un'idea del tutto nuova. Gli aeroplani sono stati concepiti con un occhio alla morfologia degli uccelli e le cornette telefoniche sono state pensate avendo in mente l'orecchio umano. Ci sono esempi ancor più specifici che risalgono già al XIX secolo, come la progettazione nel 1851 del Crystal Palace di Londra, per il quale il botanico Sir Joseph Paxton si ispirò alle "costole" di cellulosa di una varietà di giacinto sudamericano, la Victoria Amazzonica, che conferiscono alla foglia di quella pianta una capacità di resistenza tale da poter sorreggere il peso di una persona di 130 chili. Fu replicando quella tipologia di disegno geometrico a coste flessibili che Paxton concepì la struttura del palazzo londinese destinato a ospitare la "Great Exhibition". Famoso è poi il caso dell'ormai onnipresente Velcro, ideato dal suo creatore, George de Mestral, dopo una battuta di caccia da cui era tornato con la giacca coperta di lappole (infruttescenze della Arctium lappa, la bardana): imitando "l'incastro' fra i minuscoli uncini di quei frutti e i nodi del tessuto, de Mestral diede al mondo un metodo di chiusura che avrebbe surclassato la cerniera.

E man mano che progresso tecnico e osservazione biologica sono progrediti i casi di "biomimesi" si sono moltiplicati. Ne sono esempi alquanto significativi le vernici autopulenti (in sviluppo alla tedesca Sto Ag) che sfruttano il meccanismo dell'idrorepellenza usato dalla foglia di loto per tenersi pulita; l'adesivo studiato all'Università di Manchester contenente milioni di microfibre plastiche la cui funzione di adesività elettrodinamica è simile a quella dei peli presenti sul palmo delle zampe di geco; o il film antiriflesso e antiriverbero di Autotype, sviluppato ispirandosi direttamente alle strutture oculari della falene, evolutesi nel tempo per raccogliere la maggior quantità di luce possibile in assenza di riflesso, evitando così di essere intercettate nella notte dai predatori.

Ma tutte queste meraviglie biomimetiche sono state finora fortuite, casuali (come per il Velcro) o comunque sporadiche, anche perché spesso le tecnologie d'impronta biomimetica restano "nascoste" nei laboratori di biologia, dove vengono scoperte ma non sfruttate, mancando un processo strutturato che consenta di valutarne economicità e implementabilità sì da trasformarle in tecniche produttive vere e proprie.

Proprio per dare sistematicità all'approccio della "biomimicry" la Benyus – in collaborazione con Gunter Pauli, economista visionario, pioniere della sostenibilità (www.zeri.org) - ha concepito e lanciato l'"Innovation per Conservation Fund", che si farà carico del finanziamento e del lancio industriale (tramite i classici strumenti dello studio di fattibilità e del relativo business plan) di 100 tecnologie biomimetiche – le cosiddette Nature's 100 Best - che abbiano sostenibilità non solo ecologica ma anche economica. Cento modi di risolvere problemi di processo e produzione partendo dalla famosa domanda: "Cosa farebbe la Natura dinanzi una tale situazione?" Il primo prodotto ad aver beneficiato di tale "procedura" è stato da poco lanciato in Australia: si tratta di un antibatterico (Biosignal, www.biosignal.com) creato copiando la capacità di un'alga, la Delinea Pulchra, di interferire nella comunicazione fra colonie batteriche, fattore decisivo per la progressione di un'infezione.

Ma "Nature's 100 Best" resta pur sempre uno strumento. Perché la svolta acquisisca massa critica è necessario un salto di paradigma culturale, avverte la Benyus: "Certamente da parte dei consumatori che devono essere pronti a premiare i prodotti che dimostrano la loro sostenibilità". Ma anche e soprattutto da parte di chi i prodotti li crea e realizza. E qui gli scogli da superare sono ancora tanti: "Una volta, in un incontro con un team di ingegneri di una corporation", ricorda la Benyus, "stavo sostenendo la causa degli alberi e delle foglie come modello per la produzione di energia. Uno dei miei interlocutori mi guardò con sufficienza e mi disse: 'Le nostre celle foltovoltaiche sono molto più efficienti di una foglia d'albero". Era l'obiezione che volevo mi facessero. Risposi: "Ne sono sicura. Se per efficienza s'intende il parametro della quota di conversione di luce solare in energia. Ma posso leggere un libro sotto una fabbrica di celle solari? I materiali con cui create la vostra cella solare sono nient'altro che acqua, anidride carbonica e una manciata di minerali disciolti nel terreno? La produzione avviene nel totale silenzio con cui l'albero fa crescere le sue foglie? Quella cella solare provvede alla sua stessa manutenzione come fanno le foglie? Rilascia ossigeno per i viventi?" Il silenzio era totale e spesso, ricorda la Benyus quando, in nome della sostenibilità, decise di assestare il colpo definitivo all'orgoglio della platea dei ricercatori aziendali: "E, soprattutto, alla fine della sua vita, la vostra cella solare si trasforma in materianutritiva per il terreno?".

Biocatalysis in the News - Computers team up with evolution to design novel enzymes

The dream of designer drugs highly specific in action with zero side effects has come closer by combining atomic level computer prediction with natural selection in the laboratory. Following the 2008's first design of an artificial enzyme for catalysing a chemical reaction, there is increased collaboration among researchers to accelerate progress towards this goal. The stage for closer collaborative work between computer protein design specialists and experimental biochemists was set at the recent European Science Foundation (ESF) Conference Protein Design and Evolution for Biocatalysis held in Sant Feliu de Guixols, Spain, in October 2008.

The conference drew inspiration from the great achievement in the field during 2008 in designing an enzyme from scratch that speeded up a well known reaction called Kemp Elimination by up to 100,000 times. In Kemp Elimination, a proton is extracted from a carbon atom, in a reaction for which the enzyme is not actually found in Nature but involves the element upon which life is rooted. It sets the stage for the future design of enzymes that have applications in production of drugs and also non-medicinal branches of biotechnology, such as brewing and food processing, according to Jiri Damborsky, chair of the ESF conference, from Masaryk University in the Czech Republic.

"The way to move forward involves a mix of rational design and directed evolution," said Damborsky. The process may start with computer models to generate a molecular design for a protein with structure and function as close as possible to a desired target. Although great progress has been made with such de novo design, current models do not take account of some of the finer physical aspects of molecules and their behaviour, such as dynamics and bonding with ions in solvents, and also the exact geometry of the structure. Differences in scale as small as a few picometers (that is 10-12 metres, or 1/100 the diameter of a hydrogen atom) can make a significant difference in the action of an enzyme.

So even though a computer can design a protein with atomic precision, it still has to be fine-tuned, which can only be achieved in the laboratory. This is why de novo design of proteins requires collaboration between experimentalists and theoreticians.

Next comes a two step process to refine the protein that has been designed by computer or other means. The first step is to mimic evolutionary mutation to create a diverse range of closely related molecules in the hope that one will have the right structure. This process, known as directed evolution, creates many variants of the original protein. The second step is then to apply selection or screening to this collection, in order to identify the molecule closest to the target. "Screens enable the researcher to identify and isolate high-performing mutants by hand, while selections automatically eliminate all non-functional mutants," said Damborsky.

Whichever method is used, it is still unlikely that any of the mutants produced in the first round of directed evolution will yield a protein that closely matches the target, in other words that has all the desired properties. Therefore, this two-step round of directed evolution is repeated several times until no further improvement can be made. "In these experiments, the 'winners' of the previous round are diversified in the next round to create a new library," said Damborsky.

Even after a number of rounds, the perfect molecule cannot usually be made at present, since further progress on various fronts is still required. Research needed to accomplish this was discussed at the ESF conference. One problem is that even when an apparently successful mutant has been created, it may not be stable. The result is that the protein does not fold properly, becoming stuck perhaps in some half way conformation and being unable to reach its final structure. Fortunately nature has had to solve the same problem during evolution, through molecules called chaperones that assist with the folding process, helping overcome kinetic obstacles on the way to reaching the final functional conformation. Damborsky pointed out that chaperones were being used in some experiments to stabilise mutant proteins and enable them to fold properly into their functional structure.

However progress is also required on other fronts identified at the ESF conference, including understanding the link between structure of a protein and the functions it has, and also how enzymes move around inside the cell. The first of these is needed to design proteins that have the right structure for a desired function, and the second to make drugs that reach their target efficiently. In general more needs to be learnt about how enzymes operate in cells, and the detailed mechanisms involved in biosynthesis of proteins and their subsequent movements or interactions.

Despite the recognition that much more research was needed, the conference sounded an upbeat note with hopes of further achievements in the immediate future. Indeed the agenda set for a follow up ESF conference included artificial life, creating novel organisms by mimicking selective processes of nature on a larger scale. This follow up conference will also pursue the goal of designing the ultimate artificial enzyme capable of catalysing biochemical reactions almost at will.

"Have you ever been to an aerial fireworks show at an amusement park, baseball game, Fourth of July celebration, or on New Year's Eve and wondered about how all the impressive colors and sounds are produced? People everywhere enjoy the fantastic explosions and the brilliant light displays of fireworks. However, these spectacles are much more than just a form of entertainment. Each firework launched into the sky is a precisely formed assembly of chemicals and fuel, carefully calibrated to produce a particular effect – a red chrysanthemum spray accompanied by a powerful explosion, or a blue strobe, for example. Understanding how the contents of a firework produce the impressive variety of colors, forms, and sound intensities requires only a simple understanding of chemical reactions.

Fireworks generate three very noticeable forms of energy: a tremendous release of sound, bright light, and heat. The tremendous booms heard at ground level are the result of the rapid release of energy into the air, causing the air to expand faster than the speed of sound. This produces a shock wave, a sonic boom.

The colors are produced by heating metal salts, such as calcium chloride or sodium nitrate, that emit characteristic colors. The atoms of each element absorb energy and release it as light of specific colors. The energy absorbed by an atom rearranges its electrons from their lowest-energy state, called the ground state, up to a higher-energy state, called an excited state. The excess energy of the excited state is emitted as light, as the electrons descend to lower-energy states, and ultimately, the ground state. The amount of energy emitted is characteristic of the element, and the amount of energy determines the color of the light emitted. For example, when sodium nitrate is heated, the electrons of the sodium atoms absorb heat energy and become excited. This high-energy excited state does not last for long, and the excited electrons of the sodium atom quickly release their energy, about 200 kJ/mol, which is the energy of yellow light.

The amount of energy released, which varies from element to element, is characterized by a particular wavelength of light. Higher energies correspond to shorter wavelength light, whose characteristic colors are located in the violet/blue region of the visible spectrum. Lower energies correspond to longer wavelength light, at the orange/red end of the spectrum".

Gli scienziati e gli artisti sono di continuo chiamati a riformulazioni di saperi e pratiche ben salde e condivise dalla comunità a cui appartengono, ma anche a intraprendere nuovi percorsi di ricerca (anche nel senso di intersezioni con questioni pratiche ed interdisciplinari), in quanto sollecitati sia dai problemi e dai quesiti rimasti ancora insoluti, sia dalle aporie e dai paradossi presenti nella loro disciplina di riferimento. Difatti, una delle chiavi di volta che sollecitano l'artista e lo scienziato a concepire pratiche e ipotesi di lavoro in parte o del tutto innovative è proprio la sconcertante presenza di paradossi laddove non ci saremmo mai aspettati che si sarebbero manifestati. Prendiamo la logica per esempio: chi conosce - anche solo per grandi linee - lo sviluppo (storico e concettuale) plurisecolare di questa disciplina, sa che buona parte dei risultati ottenuti è emersa proprio nel costante tentativo di risolvere un ormai ben noto paradosso, quello del mentitore. Accanto a questo, Sergio Bernini pone un altro paradosso logico: il paradosso di Russell. La trattazione introduttiva di questi due paradossi logici è svolta in modo chiaro e rigoroso, per cui la lettura risulta agevole anche per i profani di logica.

Ma i paradossi non sono solo logici: pare che ci siano anche paradossi reali. Ormai, il detentore di una media cultura scientifica dovrebbe sapere che un'altra disciplina scientifica ha inaugurato nell'ultimo secolo appena trascorso la ricerca di tutto un mondo paradossale: la fisica (in particolare, quella delle nanoparticelle). Ed appunto Maria Luisa Dalla Chiara, Roberto Giuntini e Giuliano Toraldo di Francia, si incaricano di accompagnarci nella descrizione dell'intrigante paradosso EPR (così chiamato per evocare i tre fisici che lo presentarono nel lontano 1935 sulla Physical Review: Einstein, Podolsky e Rosen), il quale fornisce succulenti motivi di indagine non solo ai fisici, ma anche ai filosofi, agli psicologi e ai neuroscienziati. Ma non c'è solo questo: troviamo anche una riformulazione dell'esperimento delle due fenditure (tratta da un libro di Gilmore, Alice nel paese dei quanti) e riferimenti alla computazione quantistica, all'entanglement e alla semantica olistica. È una lettura un po' più impegnativa, non per una presunta insufficienza da parte dei redattori, ma per l'effettiva condizione controintuitiva (rispetto al senso comune, ma anche rispetto alla fisica classica) cui ci conduce la fisica quantistica (…)".

Thomas Andrew "Tom" Lehrer (born April 9, 1928) is an an american song writer, satirist, pianist and mathematician. He has lectured on mathenatics and musical theater. Lehrer is best known for the pithy, humorous songs he recorded in the 1950s and 60s.

EKB Technology has developed an electrical system to remove harmful by-products from bioreactors, making the synthesis of therapeutic proteins more effective.
Therapeutic proteins are produced by cell cultures grown in laboratories and are used to treat conditions including some cancers, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, anaemia and haemophilia. The manufacturing process creates lactic acid and ammonium which contaminates the reaction making it less efficient, or in some cases causing death of the cells in culture.
EKB is a spin-out joint venture between Oxford University and C-Tech Innovation of Capenhurst near Cheshire. It was founded to commercialise a patent to use electricity to extract lactic acid from the reaction chamber during the commercial production of the acid.
Dr David Baghurst, EKB's general manager, said: 'If you take the lactic acid out of a reaction, you can concentrate it. This makes downstream processing easier, because you end up with your product concentrated in a reaction chamber that doesn't contain all the cell debris you get in a biocatalysis chamber.'
EKB discovered that during mammalian cell culture reaction, there is contamination by lactase and ammonium, which are by-products of the production of proteins and which inhibit and limit the density of cells that can be used in the reactor.
They can also inhibit the formation of the target enzymes, as the cells that produce them treat them as toxins. The researchers realised that they could use almost exactly the same kind of electrical system to remove by-products as well as the products.
'They did some experiments and found that when cells sit around in the by-products then the cells die. But if you continuously remove the by-products, you get healthy cells, so the cells become more productive and keep going longer,' said Baghurst.
A reactor consists of a series of chambers with the biocatalysis reaction taking place in the middle with a membrane either side of it. Plates with an electrical potential are placed outside the membranes. When a field is applied across them, the charged species move across the membrane — in this case, ammonium goes to one electrode and lactate to the other. The non-charged cells remain in the central reaction chamber unharmed by the by-products.
The hardware employs the same technology used in electrodialysis that makes seawater drinkable, but is being used in bioreactors for the first time.
So far the technology has been tested on model systems. EKB is now seeking an industry partner to trial it in a real cell system.
'This technology could make manufacturer's current systems more productive,' said Baghurst. 'If you can remove the contaminants, the reactions can be carried out at higher cell densities which means the same volume of reactor can make more product.
Also, some systems are so sensitive that the existing equipment doesn't make a commercially viable process; it's just too expensive to generate the materials. This technology could make it affordable.'

Escher is based on mathematical principles like tessellations, spherical geometry, the Möbius strip, unusual perspectives, visual paradoxes, different kinds of symmetries and impossible objects. There are followers of his searching for the figural representation of these abstract ideas, and also there are important artists who started to deal with mathematic related art alone apart from his influence but they reached similar conclusion as for example Oscar Reutersvard (1915 – 2002) who is well known as the "father of impossible figures."

Japanese artist Makoto Nakamura has taken tessellation a step beyond the plane with his awesome animations.

"I think that a tessellation is a new way to express ideograms rather than merely a way to express optical illusions. The tessellation involves various conflicting concepts. I have created several works that comprehend the world using tessellations, expressing scenes of a dense ecosystem encompassing the forests and the sea". (Makoto Nakamura)

"Il Chimico Svedese J.J. Berzelius (1835) fu il primo a formulare nella scienza il concetto di "catalisi" osservando che alcune reazioni chimiche sembravano procedere più velocemente in presenza di un'altra sostanza, che rimaneva inalterata, e suggerì che tale sostanza esercitasse quella che egli definì una "forza catalitica", sottolineando che tale attrazione era cosa diversa dall'affinità poiché determinava una influenza (Einfluss ) capace provocare una variazione delle affinità chimiche ordinarie tra atomi e molecole. Berzelius scrisse infatti :"...E' provato che parecchi corpi semplici e composti solubili ed insolubili hanno la proprietà di esercitare su un altro corpo un'azione molto differente all'affinità chimica. Per mezzo di questa azione, essi producono in questi corpi decomposizione dei loro elementi ai quali restano estranei". Ancora non era chiaro se la catalisi fosse dovuta ad effetti di natura elettrica, ovvero nel caso di fenomeni auto-catalitici alla formazione di composti chimici intermedi, dotati di vita breve capaci di influenzare l' andamento della reazione…"

Paolo Manzelli, Docente ordinario di Chimica Fisica nell'Università di Firenze, ha coltivato varie esperienze internazionali di sviluppo scientifico e culturale. L'autorganizzazione, intesa come modello di sviluppo attraverso il quale sistemi complessi formati da molteplici elementi interagiscono efficacemente tra loro, ha stimolato molti settori di ricerca, tra cui la biologia, le neuroscienze e la cibernetica le bio – e nano-tecnologie. L'impatto dell'autorganizzazione si è progressivamente diffuso non soltanto nei settori scientifici ma anche nelle scienze sociali, nei linguaggi della comunicazione, nell'arte e nella cultura. Gli artisti, per esempio, hanno tradotto in emozioni e rappresentato in modo intuitivo il concetto di autorganizzazione riuscendo a mettere in evidenza una nuova espressivita' di indole transdisciplinare. Innovazione e creatività nascono da salti di paradigma piuttosto che dal perpetuarsi di antiquati modelli cognitivi. Il meeting, attraverso testimonianze di esperti, artisti e scienziati, intende focalizzare l'attenzione su sistemi auto-organizzati di diverso tipo e sulla possibilità di replicare tali modelli in contesti di carattere economico e sociale innovativi. La finalità del meeting è quella di offrire non solo uno spaccato di nuove esperienze e di diversi approcci cognitivi , ma anche di stimolare nuove applicazioni tecnologiche su cui costruire iniziative imprenditoriali, concentrandosi sulle opportunità offerte dall'Unione Europea per traslare il concetto di autorganizzazione nei settori chiave della ricerca e sviluppo. Sabato 22 novembre 2008, presso la sala consiliare dell'Amministrazione Provinciale di Sondrio, si terrà il convegno "Paesaggio ed Economia - Il paesaggio quale elemento fondante dell'identità e quale fattore di sviluppo socio-economico sostenibile", promosso dalla Società Economica Valtellinese e della Fondazione Luigi Bombardieri.

L'iniziativa, cui partecipano in qualità di Relatori illustri personalità del mondo accademico, imprenditoriale e professionale, intende approfondire la tematica del rapporto fra paesaggio ed economia, con specifico riferimento al territorio alpino, in particolare la Valtellina, in considerazione dell'esigenza di sviluppo di relazioni alpino-transfrontaliere. Alberto Olivero, nostro Direttore della Divisione Marketing e Commerciale, e "Voce di Ibiocat", ha nuovamente messo a disposizione un po' del suo grande talento di attore-doppiatore professionista, regalandoci la poesia di Primo Levi "Agli amici" (v. post di ieri 9 novembre), che va ad aggiungersi alle altre due, che hanno già arricchito in precedenza il nostro Blog ("La pioggia nel pineto" di Gabriele D'Annunzio, v. post del 24 giugno 2008, e il "Notturno" di Alcmane (v. post del 20 ottobre 2008).

Se queste impeccabili letture poetiche consentono di apprezzare il talento di un professionista del suo calibro, da esse non può tuttavia emergere la simpatia e l'affabilità del "personaggio" Alberto Olivero, per chi non abbia la fortuna di conoscerlo e frequentarlo di persona.

Per la giornata mondiale per i diritti dell'infanzia, il Comune di Cervia ha voluto organizzare un seminario sul tema dell'affido, dell'adozione internazionale e della promozione dei diritti del bambino, in cui emerge anche il ruolo del turismo responsabile, come promotore dello sviluppo dei popoli e della dignità delle persone.

Le nuove proposte di turismo responsabile
Tra le proposte del prossimo anno la novità principale è rappresentata da "ECUADOR - L'incanto della sua incredibile biodiversità". Situato tra il Perù, la Colombia e l’Oceano Pacifico, l’Ecuador è un paese relativamente piccolo e quindi facile da visitare anche per chi non dispone di molto tempo. È l’ideale “punto di partenza” per conoscere il Sud America.

"…Se nella vita e nell'opera di un uomo qualcosa si afferma con un rilievo diverso e prepotente quasi a imporsi come segno di un destino, in Primo Levi questo segno, insieme esistenziale e letterario, è il persistere tenace di una inconsueta simbiosi tra la razionalità costante e la grazia rara, e casuale, della poesia. Evidentemente nello scienziato e nel tecnico che usava per il suo lavoro la scienza che dischiude i misteri della

natura ma si chinava anche su di lei con animo puro e cuore commosso, interrogandola al di là di ogni sapere scientifico per trarne risposte alle eterne domande che accomunano gli uomini semplici ai geni, Socrate al marinaio ieri come oggi, in Primo Levi dunque, chimico e scrittore, razionalmente e costantemente memore, intermittentemente poeta, questo miscuglio è segno di destino.

Aveva ragione Lorca quando profetava che verranno giorni difficili durante i quali la poesia ci apparirà necessaria come il pane. Di questa necessità, e capacità, di vitale nutrimento sono un segno certo le liriche di Ad ora incerta.

Ora resta, al di là delle briciole di memoria, il pane grande e buono dell'opera di Levi, che mi è cara, dal primo all'ultimo libro. E resta, preziosa, la poesia che ebbi con una lettera da lui e che mi sembra giusto riportare qui adesso perché altri vi possano sentire quel che io vi sentii.

In the year 2001, The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences decided to award the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2001 for the development of catalytic asymmetric synthesis, with one half jointly to William S. Knowles and Ryoji Noyori "for their work on chirally catalysed hydrogenation reactions" and the other half to K. Barry Sharpless "for his work on chirally catalysed oxidation reactions".

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2001 is about molecules that exist in two forms that are mirror images of each other. This property is named "chirality". Often it is important to produce only one of these forms because the molecules, despite being so similar, have quite different functions, in our cells, for example.

Dear Friends,

my musical choice of the day is Scriabin, Etude Op.8 No.12 in D-Sharp minor.

Etude Op. 8 No. 12 is a technical etude for piano in D-sharp minor which was written by Alexander Scriabin in 1894. It features many technical challenges including treacherous stretches with intervals up to an eleventh, numerous jumps in the left hand, repetitive chord strikes, and abundant octaves. This piece was a favorite encore of Vladimir Horowitz. The dramatic leitmotif and moving recitative of the solo in the upper voices on the chordal background is characteristic of Scriabin's early creations.The piece's tempo varies between 100 and 112 bpm.

Alexander Nikolayevich Scriabin (6 January 1872 [O.S. 25 December 1871]–27 April 1915) was a Russian composer and pianist who developed a highly lyrical and idiosyncratic tonal language. Driven by a poetic, philosophical and aesthetic vision that bordered on the mystical, he can be considered the primary figure of Russian Sybolism in music. Scriabin influenced composers like Olivier Messiaen, Sergei Prokofiev and Igor Stravinsky. Scriabin stands as one of the most innovative and most controversial of composers. The Great Soviet Encyclopedia said of Scriabin that, "No composer has had more scorn heaped or greater love bestowed..." Lev Tolstoj once described Scriabin's music as "a sincere expression of genius."

Alcmane, poeta lirico greco, visse a Sparta nel VII sec. a.C.

Figura leggendaria, avvolta da un alone romanzesco, fu forse uno schiavo proveniente dalla Lidia, liberato per il suo talento e divenuto maestro di danza, musica e poesia.

In questo celebre "notturno", molto ammirato ed imitato nei secoli successivi, il sonno della natura, rappresentato con mezzi semplicissimi e di facile memoria – i più adatti alla tradizione orale – è l'immagine stessa della quiete immota della notte.

Dormono le cime dei monti, gli abissi, i promontori e le forre, gli animali nutriti dalla terra fertile, le belve feroci, le api laboriose che accompagnano la vita quotidiana dell'uomo, i mostri terribili e fantastici che popolano le profondità marine, gli uccelli dalle lunghe ali.

Tutti riposano nell'oscurità, come sospesi in un silenzio incantato.

Con questo breve commento al "Notturno" di Alcmane, che inaugura la rubrica "La voce di IBIOCAT", Silvia Cipollina, oggi Professore Ordinario di Diritto Tributario nella Facoltà di Giurisprudenza dell'Università di Pavia, ricorda la Professoressa Anadia Cellerino e gli anni del Liceo Classico "G.
